Midcoast Humane campuses in Brunswick and Edgecomb (formerly Coastal Humane Society and Lincoln County Animal Shelter) will offer half-price adoptions on adult animals one year or older all month long to help find homes for high numbers of animals in their facilities, and to create space for animals displaced by Florence. The special is called “Fall in Love.”

Midcoast Humane has taken in several animals displaced from hurricane Florence, and will continue to take in more throughout the month of October, space-permitting.

So far, the shelter has taken in 20 kittens as part of hurricane relief effort. The kittens became available for adoption this week.

Southern shelters in the Carolinas continue to grapple with a surge in homeless animals and are turning to rescue groups in other parts of the country for relief.

Midcoast Humane  is committed to maximizing kennel space to assist other rescue groups in crisis.  In addition to the 20 kittens, the organization plans to take in several Florence dogs in the coming weeks as well. With an already high number of local stray and surrendered animals from their 40 contracted communities, the Fall In Love adoption campaign will create much-needed space for animals in need.

“We believe that all animals’ lives are important. We are proud that we can partner with shelters and rescues outside of New England to help give dogs and cats a home in Maine, where adopters and loving families await them,” said Trendy Stanchfield, executive director of Midcoast Humane.

“Overpopulation is a national issue, and we will do whatever we can to help rehome animals from high-population regions of our country. During a natural disaster like Florence, we make ourselves available to help out as much as we can,” she noted.

October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, and Midcoast Humane has also teamed up with the ASPCA for the adoption campaign Find Your Fido in the hope that more people will adopt this October.

“Our animals are spayed/neutered and up-to-date on vaccinations. They really are a steal, and they’ll steal your heart,” Stanchfield continued.  “It’s a great time to save a life!”
