Gene A. Pisano, (Gino Adolpho), 89, died after a struggle with kidney disease on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013 at his home on Barters Island in Boothbay.

He was born on November 26, 1929 in Lynn, Mass., to Louis and Michelina Pisano. He entered Boston College upon graduating from Lynn English and left after two years to enlist in the Army Air Corp where he served as the flight engineer on a B17.

After the war, he used his GI Bill benefits at Boston College and then went on to New York University where he met and married his wife of 62 years, Janice Beck Pisano. He eventually earned his master's degree in English and industrial arts at North Adams State and Fitchburg State Colleges.

He worked for General Electric Companies for 25 years, both in Lenox and Lynn, Mass., before retiring in 1985. He briefly left GE to teach industrial arts for Pentucket and Reading high schools so as to pursue his passion for sailing the summer away on his beloved Lodestar with his family. His passions also included fencing and boatbuilding; he was an avid reader of history.

While retired in Boothbay, he served on the Boothbay Port Committee, as a trustee of the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library, the Barters Island Community Center and was the first historian for the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens.

Surviving Gene is his wife, Janice Pisano of Boothbay; his brother, Reno Pisano of Nahant, Mass.; his daughter, Susan Pisano of Rockport, Mass.; his son and daughter-in-law, Louis and Diane Pisano of Phoenix, N.Y.; his daughter and son-in-law Laura and Bradley Steer of Concord, Mass.; and his grandchildren, Anthony, Katherine, Zachary and Chase.
