Forrest Carver wins Edgecomb selectmen's seat
The first time was a charm for Forrest Carver as he won his election to the selectboard. During Edgecomb's May 17 referendum and municipal election, Carver defeated former Selectman Stuart Smith, 213-90. All other municipal races were uncontested. John Allen won election to the school committee. There were two planning board positions decided. Joanna Breen won election as a write-in candidate and Philip Haas won re-election. All four are three-year terms.
Four incumbents won re-election to one-year terms: Claudia Coffin, treasurer and town clerk; Rebecca Brewer, tax collector; and Scott Griffin, road commissioner.
On May 18, Coffin reported all but one referendum question received approval. No. 32 asked residents "Do you favor expanding the Wiscasset Water District's service territory into the entire town of Edgecomb?" This was a non-binding "test question" gauging residents' interest in joining the district. The question was defeated 102-165, according to Coffin.
Last year, Wiscasset Water District received legislative approval to expand into Edgecomb. The district has three years to gain approval of Edgecomb and Wiscasset voters for expansion.
In a separate ballot, residents approved adopting a budget validation referendum regarding future school budget voting procedures. The special question asked residents, "Do you wish to reinstate the School Budget Validation Referendum process in the Town of Edgecomb for three years?" According to town officials, Edgecomb last had a BVR in 2010. The question had 181 votes for adoption and 102 against.
The BVR will validate future school budget meeting results. The BVR begins next year, and is in effect for three years.
