Footbridges

The interest Wiscasset residents and officials have shown over what to do, not do, or when, at and near Wiscasset’s White’s Island and its footbridges, is reassuring.

Memories and tradition matter and so do safety, accessibility and costs. Melding those interests tends to be a complex recipe: It can take a while, may not be easy and the end results reflect the quality of the effort.

Except where warranted for safety, it’s wise to take all the time needed to plan, whether the project or projects end up being the most or the least they can be, however the town sees fit. Some projects can be hard to redo; some, impossible to fully undo.

Wiscasset’s decision to hold off on seeking a town vote on a White’s Island project makes sense, providing the safety issue with the bridges remains a talking point.

Week’s positive parting thought: Flowers are really starting to appear in yards and gardens now. Enjoy the color!
