Food Pantry vouchers: What are they?
It is well known in our community that the food pantry, thanks to the generosity of its donors, offers its clients a broad selection of canned, boxed, refrigerated and frozen food during its Friday open hours. Clients can go to the pantry once every four weeks unless they have a food emergency, when special arrangements are made to help meet their needs. All residents of the Boothbay peninsula are welcome at the food pantry.
Less well known is that the pantry also gives clients vouchers for them to exchange for certain food products between their monthly visits. Two vouchers for milk, eggs, bread, and butter or margarine are given to each client during every regular visit. They are to be used at our local Hannaford and are dated two weeks apart, allowing the client to acquire those dairy and bread products twice during the course of the month. The voucher items are given in varying amounts to reflect the size of each client’s family.
In recent years, the food pantry has expanded its offerings through special programs designed to increase clients’ opportunities to have fruit, vegetables, meat, and seafood. At least twice a year vouchers to be exchanged for fresh or frozen fruit and vegetables are mailed to all food pantry clients for their use over a three-month period at our local Hannaford or at Brown’s or Cunningham’s farm markets. In the same way, vouchers exchangeable for fresh or frozen meat and seafood usable at our Hannaford for a three-month period are mailed to clients at least twice a year. Finally, in lieu of the Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner “boxes” that we gave prior to Covid, we substituted two other voucher based programs at Hannaford, insuring a wonderful meal for each family.
