Down East Yacht Club cruising into 60 years of fun
What began in 1966 as a small group of like-minded boaters has grown into a thriving club of nearly 250 members. As the Down East Yacht Club (DEYC) celebrates its 60th year, the “Fun Club” continues to expand, welcoming 14 new members this season with several more pending.
The 2025 season was filled with events: winter gatherings in Maine and Florida, the annual Launch Party, Commodore’s Luncheon, cruising day trips, the signature Summer Cruise, the Commodore’s Cruise, an ice cream social on the banks of Crow Point, the Annual Meeting at the Tugboat Inn, and the final Daytripper cruise to Oven’s Mouth.
The season concludes with the much-anticipated Haul Out Party at Blake’s Boatyard in September—an event not to be missed. The beloved “Woody Wagon” will once again be on hand, serving libations and helping members swap stories from the season: foggy passages, legendary winter house parties, regifted treasures at the Yankee Swap, and even record-setting ice cream consumption.
Commodore Kristen King has guided DEYC this year with humor, enthusiasm, and a vivacious spirit. She is joined by Vice Commodore Bob Ewing, Rear Commodore Steve Marin, Treasurer Steve Whipple, Secretary Suzanne Rugh, and Administrative Assistant Michele Barter Ripley. A successful “Fun Club” thrives thanks to its officers, dedicated committee members, tireless volunteers, and engaged membership.
Summer Cruise: Fog, fun and fellowship
This summer, more than 40 boats and 85 members and guests came together for a weeklong voyage along the Maine coast. Despite a foggy start, the 2025 Summer Cruise proved once again why it remains a highlight of Boothbay Harbor’s boating season.
Stops included Tenants Harbor for a lively Captains’ Dinner, Camden for a dockside trivia night, Islesboro for the popular Dinghy Regatta, and Belfast for the wildly imaginative “Crazy Hat” cocktail party. Members also enjoyed dinner at the newly reopened Bucks Restaurant in Bucks Harbor and capped the cruise with a barbecue and awards celebration at Hinckley’s rigging shed in Northeast Harbor.
High winds prevented the scheduled stop at Buckle Island, but members embraced the change, scattering to Northeast Harbor, Somes Sound, and Pretty Marsh—a reminder that some of the best moments of cruising are the unplanned ones.
“The Summer Cruise is not just about the destinations—it’s about community,” said Fleet Captain Terry Traver. “This year’s voyage created another season of memories on the water, strengthening bonds among those who share a love of cruising, laughter, and life on the Maine coast.”
Planning is already underway for next summer, when Traver will proudly serve as Rear Commodore under incoming Commodore Bob Ewing and Vice Commodore Steve Marin.
