Doing good things

Wed, 03/16/2022 - 8:45am

This week’s news is full of people doing good things, both locally and abroad.

Big thanks to Southport’s Paul Zalucky for finding ways to protect his extended family and other people from harm during the current war in the Ukraine. It is a situation that seems to get worse by the day as Russia is showing no remorse.

The Boothbay Region Elementary School student leadership team, with help from others, stepped up to collect coloring books and crayons for the Ukrainian children who have crossed over into Romania. Hopefully this group can find the funding to send the materials across the ocean.

Area churches are also collecting donations to help the Ukrainians.

The Southport Island Association, Fire Department and businesses provided St. Patrick’s Day food to island residents over the weekend. A holiday treat.

Our American Legion Post 36 is joining the discussion in trying to keep two of Maine veterans homes in Machias and Caribou open despite financial and staffing problems.

I am sure there is more news out there of people in our small region of the world doing their best to help their fellow citizens and others around the globe.

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” – Margaret Mead
