BRRDD directors review potential fee increases
Boothbay Region transfer station fees are likely to rise in August. During the May 8 meeting, interim station manager William Johnson recommended a rate hike to coincide with rates other facilities charge. Johnson gave directors a fee schedule of what Boothbay Region charges and those of five others. "As you can see, we charge way less," he said.
Johnson provided Boothbay's fee schedule for 12 items such as construction, bulky waste and demolition debris, freon appliances, tires, mattresses, box springs and sofas. He compared Boothbay Region's charges with Wiscasset, Waldoboro, Nobleboro, Union and Richmond stations' fee.
Chairman Jody Lewis wanted to wait before changing the fee structure. "I want to take a closer look because I think we can charge a little more," he said. "William, you've done a fine job, and it shows you put a lot of work into this."
The directors agreed to wait until July before voting on a fee structure increase. If approved, the increase would occur in August.
In other action, Johnson announced the 15 transfer station employees would embark on their forklift training by Maine Department of Labor. Safety Works! is an outreach program sponsored by the Department of Labor and designed to reduce job-related injuries, illnesses and deaths.
Other state-required trainings would take place online at a later date, said Johnson.
Directors are leaving the selection for adding a door to the new picker's shed up to Johnson. He received a $1,422 quote for a roll-door and told directors he is waiting for two other responses.
Directors accepted a $13,500 bid from Patterson & Sons Paving in Rockland. The bid is $3,500 more than budgeted, but directors believed if they didn't accept it the price could become closer to $20,000 in a few weeks.
Johnson reported Giles had received a new truck and it was being fitted for additional equipment. Directors held an executive session for which they invited Johnson to remain. May 12, Johnson reported directors took no action following the session. Directors meet next at 5 p.m. Thursday, June 12 in the business office.
