Democracy Maine and Rank The Vote: Bring ‘Majority Rules’ to the Harbor Theater
Veteran documentary filmmaker AJ Schnack’s newest project explores the first use of Final Four voting in Alaska, a combination of Ranked Choice Voting and Open Primaries, in a look at how it has changed politics in the
state for the better.
Sunday, October 13 at 5 p.m. join Democracy Maine and Rank The Vote at the Harbor Theater in Boothbay Harbor for a special showing of ‘Majority Rules’ the newest documentary film out of visionary director AJ Schnack. There will be brief remarks from some very special in-person guests TBA. Anyone can reserve a seat here.
This groundbreaking documentary poses the question “What if changing the way we vote could change everything?” With America's democratic experiment mired in division and dysfunction, the state of Alaska votes to revolutionize their election system. The surprising results spark new alliances, a growing call for election reform, and fierce pushback from political parties. Could changing how Americans vote also change politics for the better?
In concert with Unite America, a non-partisan think tank and campaign funder, Schnack takes a
months-long look behind the scenes of Alaskan politics as the state implements the first in the nation reform of its kind, Final Four Voting.
Final Four Voting combines the freedom of choice of Ranked Choice Voting with the level playing field that Open Primaries bring. It has all candidates run on the same open primary ballot, regardless of party. Voters vote like normal in the primary and then the top four candidates advance to the general election in November, in which voters rank their favorite choices. This screening is especially relevant for Mainers, who are the pioneers that inspired this type of reform by being the first state to enact statewide Ranked Choice Voting in 2016. The film shows how the Alaskan experience further validates Maine’s successes, while illuminating additional possibilities for our state.
One of the most powerful parts of the documentary highlights the positive impacts of the reform in the Alaska Legislature – a step Maine is still pursuing. And the film is the first to shine a spotlight on the “Primary Problem,” where partisan primaries are leading to the disenfranchisement of 80-90% of America – a crisis hidden in plain sight, as well as how nonpartisan primaries offer a “Primary Solution.” Every Mainer near Boothbay/Boothbay Harbor should attend this screening.
