Over the last year, Newagen residents have joined in opposition to a utility line route across Newagen Harbor that would have carried water and electricity to and treated wastewater from the Cuckolds Light Station.

Now that route has been replaced by one that follows an existing cable route that travels north from the Cuckolds along the eastern shore of Southport Island and crosses through a small estuarine inlet. The plan is for water and electricity to be accessed along Route 238; and for an unused septic field on a private property on the west side of Route 238 to receive treated wastewater.

Although the new utility line route is more acceptable to those on Newagen Harbor, the new crossing has shifted concerns to a new group of neighbors.

Linda and Fred Macvicar, whose house overlooks the salt pond, said they are concerned about impacts to wildlife, residents’ views, and also for the ability of the utility lines to withstand storms.

“We’re worried about it getting all torn up,” Linda Macvicar said. “We’re concerned about the wildlife that use the pond and marsh.” Fred Macvicar said he is also worried that septic lines will be broken by winter storms that freeze the pond completely and toss boulders like pebbles.

The Macvicars and their neighbors would also like assurance that someone will be responsible for maintenance and monitoring during the life of the project and for removing the utility lines should the Cuckolds close.

Cuckolds Council President Paul Coulombe said he understand residents’ concerns, but does not believe they are warranted.

”I understand that nobody wants this in their back yard,” Coulombe said. “But when I do things, I do it right. We will buy the best equipment to ensure that no one sees the pipes and there are no effects.”

Knickerbocker Group is developing plans and information for the utility line crossing in support of permit applications to the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands. These approvals are necessary before the Town of Southport can issue the necessary occupancy permit for the Cuckolds.

Danielle Betts of Knickerbocker Group has scheduled an onsite public meeting on the utility line crossing for May 12 at 4 p.m. at 737 Newagen Road.
