Cemetery district talks garage, sign repairs
Boothbay Region Cemetery District's Nov. 25 meeting was short of a quorum, so no official actions were taken. However, President Bernard "Skip" MacPhee and trustees Sara Fahnley and Clarence Campbell discussed next steps.
The board received an $18,848 estimate from TC Hafford Basement Systems for work on a storage garage at Oceanview Cemetery in Boothbay. The garage is sinking into the ground and has a crack in one of its concrete walls, so repair plans would include lifting the foundation to stabilize the building. Concerns were expressed about the upcoming winter rains and snow causing further damage.
As previously reported in the Register, the metal archway above Boothbay’s Evergreen Cemetery was destroyed after being struck with an excavator Oct. 24. At the time, the machine was being towed by a driver with New Hampshire-based Dignified Cemetery Services.
For insurance purposes, MacPhee received a verbal estimate of $20,000 for replacement from Sprague Metal Works. While the matter is still being processed through insurance, discussions were held about not replacing the sign due to its high cost.
“I'd rather spend the money on the building than the signs,” said Campbell.
The board is also awaiting an estimate for repair work on a metal sign at Oceanview.
