Boothbay now 4-0 after win over Sacopee
For the first time in decades, the Boothbay Region High School field hockey team has opened its season with four straight wins.
On Friday, the Seahawks recorded their third shutout of the season, defeating the Sacopee Valley Hawks, 3-0, on Perkins Field, BRHS.
The Hawks, who came into the game 0-3 but lost each game by one goal, were held in check as the Seahawks didn’t allow a shot on goal. Boothbay, meanwhile, put pressure on Sacopee’s goalie, who made an unofficial 30 saves.
After the scoreless first quarter, Allie Smart gave Boothbay a 1-0 lead on an assist from Natalie Flagg after a crossing pass in front of the goal where Smart tapped the ball into the open goal. The goal was at 9:33 of the second quarter.
The midfielders and defenders for Boothbay didn’t let the Hawks get close to the scoring arch, the “D,” and passed well into the offensive end.
In the third quarter, with the Seahawks in control and taking shots, Sacopee’s goalie ended up stepping on the ball after barrage of shots, which resulted in a penalty stroke. Moriah Smith took the stroke and lifted it past the goalie on her right side to give Boothbay a 2-0 lead at the 11:33 mark.
The Seahawks final goal came with just under two minutes to play in the fourth quarter as Smith dribbled the ball into the scoring arch, passed to Izzy Andreasen, who shot it into the goal.
Boothbay, in third place in Class C South as of Saturday morning, will try to get its fifth win on Monday, Sept. 15 at home against the second place Hall-Dale Bulldogs (2-1-1). Game time is 3:30 p.m.
Seahawk coach Jax van der Veen said of her players after the game, “We are proud of how hard they are working and they should be proud of themselves as well. We have a tough game on Monday against Hall-Dale who usually has a good team.”
After some brief research, it was discovered that the 1992 Seahawk field hockey team started 4-0 but with a forfeit win included in that record. Hall-Dale gave Boothbay its first loss that year.
