Boothbay Harbor Treasure Hunt sets sail for the 2026 season
The search for hidden treasure is officially underway as the second annual Boothbay Harbor Treasure Hunt launched on June 21, welcoming adventurers of all ages to explore the harbor, solve clues, and discover the rich maritime heritage of one of Maine’s most scenic waterfront communities.
The first crew to embark on the 2026 adventure was the McCaffrey family from Chelmsford, Massachusetts, who eagerly gathered to begin their quest. Organizers of the hunt met up with them at Station #6 to witness their use of the newly handcrafted pirate cipher wheel to decipher a secret message hidden among pirate symbols. With teamwork, determination, and a little pirate ingenuity, the McCaffreys successfully unlocked the coded message and continued their voyage toward the next clue.
The expanded, self-guided Treasure Hunt takes participants on a journey to 11 stamping stations located at local shops, waterfront destinations, and maritime landmarks throughout Boothbay Harbor. At each station, treasure hunters discover a small wooden treasure chest containing a unique token and add a site-specific stamp to their Treasure Map proving that they were there. Along the way, participants solve puzzles, uncover local history, learn about pirates and seafarers, and enjoy family-friendly activities designed to make learning an adventure.
The excitement builds with every clue as participants work their way toward the hunt’s final destination, where the real treasure awaits those who successfully complete the challenge. After reaching the end of the adventure, participants deposit their completed treasure maps into the Grand Treasure Chest for entry into the October 2026 Grand Prize Drawing, where lucky treasure hunters will claim outstanding prizes generously donated by local businesses.
Designed by Lighthouse Education & Nautical Studies (LENS), the Boothbay Harbor Treasure Hunt combines outdoor exploration, history, problem-solving, and family fun. Proceeds from the event support experiential learning opportunities for Boothbay Region students, including educational programs that connect young people with Maine’s maritime heritage, island ecology, and coastal environment.
"The Treasure Hunt is much more than a game," said organizers. "It's an opportunity for families to create memories together while supporting educational programs that inspire curiosity, discovery, and stewardship of our coastal resources."
Participants can begin the Hunt anytime between now and Sept. 30 and can take as long as needed to complete it. Registration is available online, and crews receive their first clue electronically before setting off on their adventure through the harbor.
Adding to the fun this year is an exclusive Treasure Hunt Pirate T-Shirt, featuring a classic pirate design on the front and a treasure chest overflowing with glittery gold on the back beneath the slogan "Finding Gold." The shirts can be purchased during online registration and conveniently picked up at Stamping Station #2 during the Hunt.
Since its introduction in 2025, the Treasure Hunt has become a unique way for visitors and local families alike to experience Boothbay Harbor while supporting a worthy cause. Along the route, participants discover hidden corners of the harbor, interact with local businesses, and learn fascinating stories connected to Maine's seafaring past.
The Hunt has also earned enthusiastic reviews from participants. Treasure hunter Leah G. summed up her experience by saying, “It was such a fun and well-organized activity! I have been in Boothbay Harbor for years, so I found the clues straightforward, but it introduced my daughter to some places she’d never been to before.”
Amber K. praised the family-friendly nature of the adventure, noting, “My eight and nine-year-old girls loved it. We are local-ish, and it was appropriately challenging and super fun. The subtle pirate signs at each location were perfect, and all the shopkeepers and staff at each location were very kind and helpful.”
Those comments reflect one of the Treasure Hunt’s primary goals: encouraging families to explore Boothbay Harbor together while creating lasting memories and discovering the community's unique waterfront character.Whether you're a seasoned treasure hunter, a curious youngster, or simply looking for a memorable family activity this summer, the Boothbay Harbor Treasure Hunt offers an unforgettable adventure filled with clues, discoveries, and a touch of pirate magic.
