Boothbay Harbor Rotary Club
President Jen Page Osman called the meeting to order close enough to 6:30 p.m. to catch a couple of late arrivals. After a traditional boiled dinner was served by the crack kitchen crew, the business of the evening commenced.
The recent tragedy in the Philippines and Rotary's response to it was a primary point of discussion. It was announced that the Club directors had voted to donate $1,000 to support Shelterbox's relief efforts, and that our club would be the coordinator of District 7780's collections in support of Shelterbox.
To further support the effort the hat was literally passed raising over $700 in additional contributions. Members are encouraged to read Marty Helman's email about a matching donation challenge. Community members interested in helping Philippine relief efforts may contact any Rotarian about making a tax-deductible contribution.
Members were provided an update on assistance efforts for those impacted by the recent train explosion in Lac Megantic Quebec. District 7780 is partnering with other local organizations to determine the best use of contributed resources. Frank and Marty Helman will be among a group of Rotarians traveling to the area in December; contact them if interested in also going.
Finally, a thank-you was expressed by Marty for the Club's Veteran's Night held at the American Legion on November 7. Viv Daniels was the big winner of this week's 50/50 and many thought provoking happy dollars were shared.
Speaker for the night was Sue Burge of Boothbay Region Community Resources. Sue provided an overview of BRCRs various activities including the Food Pantry, Woodchucks, Fuel Oil Fund and Set for Success. Having completed its second event in August, Set for Success has a goal of providing every student in the region's elementary schools with the various supplies needed for school.
Sue described this year's event where over 500 people attended and 350-plus students were provided with backpacks full of items such as pens, pencils, paper, glue sticks and more. Other goods and services including hairdressers, NextGen college savings, clothing and shoes were also available at the event. Rotary Club was an early supporter of the project along with local churches, and many local and some national businesses.
Sue outlined all of the volunteer efforts behind the day and set the stage for next year's Set for Success to be held August 17, 2014 at the Y Field House. A hearty round of applause was given to Sue for all that she and BRCR have done for the students of the Boothbay region.
At the club's November 21st meeting, greeter will be Bill Dodge, waiters will be Connie Jones and Tony Curulla, 50/50 will be handled by Skip Kreahling with Doug Harley serving as Sergeant at arms.
