Boothbay beats Traip, 2-0, to move on to semifinals
The top-seeded Boothbay Region Seahawks defeated the eighth-seeded Traip Rangers, 2-0, in the quarterfinal match of Class C South on Perkins Field, BRHS on Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 29.
UPDATED: With the win, the Seahawks will host the semifinal match on Saturday, Nov. 1 against fourth-seeded Winthrop, who defeated Hall-Dale, 3-0. Game time is tentatively set for 1 p.m.
Boothbay dominated play despite only getting two goals. The Seahawks had 15 penalty corners to Traip’s four and had 11 shots on goal to the Rangers’ one.
Sophomore Moriah Smith gave Boothbay a 1-0 lead on an unassisted goal at 13:21 of the second quarter.
Smith’s sister, sophomore Zuri Smith, sealed the deal with a goal with 19 seconds left in the game. Assisting the goal was senior co-captain Tatum French.
A smiling coach Jax Hepburn, after the game, said “It’s the survival of the fittest from here on out.”
The win was Boothbay’s 12th of the season (12-2-2, including the loss in the MVC championship game) which is the second highest win total in the 50-year history of BRHS field hockey behind the 13-win season of 2017. Also, the victory was the ninth shutout of the season.
