Two local prominent basketball figures were recognized Nov. 1 for their dedication to the game. Dave Parkhurst received the Peter Webb Legacy Award for his nearly 50 years of officiating. The board created two awards honoring outstanding boys' and girls' coaches. Board 20 of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials created the I.J. Pinkham and Raymond Convery Excellence in Coaching Awards.
"Excellence in Coaching Awards" will periodically recognize one boys' coach (Pinkham) and one girls' coach (Convery) who embody the values shared and positive impact made by Coaches Pinkham and Convery over several decades in support of the student athletes they led.
The Peter Webb Legacy Award is presented to a Maine International Association of Approved Basketball Officials member for distinguished service. The member receiving this award has committed immeasurable time and effort to the overall success of their board, the game of basketball and to basketball officiating in Maine.
The award is named after Webb, a past state commissioner, IAABO president and national interpreter. "His integrity, passion and desire to make officials better made him a superlative individual and leader. The award is not presented annually, but given when truly desired. The recipient (Parkhurst) is recognized for their contributions to the game of basketball and officiating," according to Board 20 Secretary Chris Barstow.
On Nov. 1, Clayton Pottle, an IAABO (International Association of Approved Basketball Officials) Board 20 member, accepted the Peter Webb Legacy Award on behalf of the Parkhurst family. "The family thanks the board and appreciates it," Pottle said.
The Excellence in Coaching Award is bestowed on a coach who displays the highest level of sportsmanship, consistent integrity, care and compassion for all student athletes and works to build a positive working relationship with game officials. The recipient has demonstrated support for student athletes on and off the court, providing an indelible impression that created the groundwork for lifetime success for the individuals they've influenced," according to Barstow.
Board 20 held its fall business meeting Nov. 1 in Augusta and announced its decision to honor Parkhurst, Pinkham and Convery.
