In “Lost and Found,” the current exhibit at the Maine Art Gallery in Wiscasset, three Maine artists express their joys and frustrations with the world about them. The results are intricate, intriguing, and often really quirky enough to make you laugh out loud. Two of the artists, Buzz Masters and Jennifer Lee Morrow, both from Deer Isle, will discuss their art and the circumstances that inspired these pieces in a talk at the gallery on Saturday, Aug. 14 at 2 p.m.

Buzz Masters uses wooden panels covered with a personal recipe of stucco plaster and crushed shells that, when ground down and sanded, creates a hard, but porous veneer that reacts with paint to create a fresco-like effect. Then, using layers of casein and acrylic paints, gold leaf, graphite, paper, thread, beeswax, and varnishes, she narrates her current stories. Her current work stems from the pandemic year in her fishing community and she notes that her pieces reflect this time, with rougher, heavily worked surfaces and colors that were uncomfortable to use, but that felt appropriate.

Jennifer Lee Morrow refers to her current work as bricolage, created from a diverse range of available materials. The narratives explore gender dynamics, mothering, family history and its secrets, and her personal growth. The narrative of symbols and patterns are individual to her, but open to universal interpretation. Using reflective materials and alcoves, she adds depth and intrigue — all is not as it may seem on the surface.
