Art Talk: 'Collage: The Sum of its Parts' at MAG
The Maine Art Gallery’s current show, “Whimsy: Flights of Fancy,” includes a number of delightful examples of collage. It’s a medium that appears to be more accessible to those of us who don’t consider ourselves artists in the traditional sense. After all, how hard could it be to glue bits of paper and other materials to a flat surface?
Several artists participating in the “Whimsy” exhibit, Robin Brooks, Christine Covert, Jillian Herrigel, and Catherine Worthington, will answer this question in an art talk at the Maine Art Gallery, 15 Warren St. in Wiscasset at 4 p.m. Thursday, June 5.
They will explain how they combine images, printed material, and even found objects in their quest for creations that dazzle the eye and offer a different perspective on the nature of art. Collage was identified and defined as a fine art form in the early 20th century, specifically with the work of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque.
“Whimsy” will be on exhibit until June 15. Gallery hours are Thursday through Sunday, 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.
The Maine Art Gallery offers classes for beginning and more experienced artists: Asian Brush Painting with Kichung Lizee; Plein Air Pastel and Mixed Media with Jude Valentin; Discover Your Inner Artist with Kat Logan; and Exploring Watercolor; Paint Along (Two half-day classes that may be combined). Visit maineartgallerywiscasset.org for complete details.
“Pirouette,” a freeform collage of painted paper on wood by Kathryn Shagas, currently on view at the Maine Art Gallery, is an example of an art form that will be discussed in an Art Talk on June 5.
