American Legion Post 36
The American Legion Auxiliary is holding its annual Veterans Suicide Awareness Walkathon on June 7 at 10 a.m. Veteran suicide awareness is essential because veterans face a higher risk of suicide than the general population. According to the VA’s 2024 Veteran Suicide Report, based on the latest VA 2022 statistics, there were 43 veteran suicides among the 101,873 veterans in Maine. The rate of non-veteran suicides is 23.1 per 100,000 of the general population. Nationally, there were 18.4 veteran suicides per 100,000 of the national population, which translates to 17.6 veteran suicides each day. Studies show that significant factors contributing to veteran suicide include mental health issues, substance abuse, the transition from military to civilian life- such as securing employment and housing- and social isolation. National Suicide Awareness Month is in September; therefore, to support the VA Maine’s efforts to raise awareness, the Auxiliary holds its fundraiser in June. This ensures that Togus has the resources to provide programming and personal items to assist veterans dealing with mental illness. Last year, the Auxiliary raised over $4,000. So, support our Auxiliary by taking part in this “Walk!” It starts at the Boothbay Harbor Fire Department parking lot at 10 a.m., followed by a scenic walking tour of the Harbor.
Thanks to the generosity of the Henry Rowe family, who provided the initial funds to establish the American Legion Post 36 Educational Scholarship, we made our first donation this year. The purpose of the scholarship is to support local military personnel and veterans in their educational pursuits. This year, the $500 scholarship was awarded to Health Services Technician Third Class Alejandra Claro of the USCG. In accepting this award, she expressed her thanks in this letter: “I would like to thank Boothbay American Legion Post 36 for the scholarship award I was honored to receive this year. I will be using this scholarship to continue my education through Purdue Global University, focusing on the field of healthcare. My program of study includes phlebotomy certification, CPR/First Aid certification, and the purchase of textbooks necessary for courses in Physician Assistant and Registered Nursing programs. Healthcare has always been my passion. I view the development of my skills as a gift—one that enables me to help others and make a meaningful difference in the healthcare community. I am currently serving as a Health Services Technician Third Class with the U.S. Coast Guard and pursuing a degree in healthcare, all while living in the wonderful community of Boothbay. Alejandra Claro.” Supporting our Post’s fundraising efforts, such as our semi-monthly breakfasts and various events throughout the year, ensures that this scholarship and other programs supporting our community continue to grow.
The Red Cross Blood Drive is held at the American Legion Hall the first Thursday each month. The next day is June 5. Sign up either online or call 800-733-2767.
