Adventures abound at WW & F Railway this month
Saturdays throughout July, you can board the WW&F’s Lavender Pickin Trains to SeaLyon Farm for one of the most unique summertime activities in all of New England. After a ride aboard our historic trains, you’ll reach SeaLyon Farm where you can pick your own lavender; peruse a plethora of lavender-themed goods; dine on farm fresh food from selected local vendors; enjoy some Maine-made beer and cider from Six River Cider; take a horse-drawn wagon ride around the farm; and partake in other fun activities.
Live music lovers should ride the WW&F for Music on the Railway July 13 at 2 p.m. The concert, presented by Maine-based trio Darlin’ Corey, features Erica Brown on fiddle, Matt Shipman on strings, and Kris Day on bass. Darlin’ Corey draws on the many threads of North American folk music; their elegant harmonies are the beating heart of their sound, in both their original music and the traditional folk, old time and bluegrass music they showcase. In Darlin’ Corey’s singing and playing, you can feel the many years of dedication to these celebrated musical traditions.
Food will also be available at the concert. All this takes place at WW&F’s beautiful open air concert pavilion. In addition, WW&F’s ‘Sheepscot Valley Steam Train’ departs multiple times each Saturday and select Sundays. The 90-minute round-trip traverses the entire length of the restored railway. Along the way you’ll pass through pine and spruce forest, farmland and tiny hamlets. At Trout Brook there will be a short layover to see the locomotive turn on the turntable (a visitor favorite!) before climbing up "the Mountain," the steepest mainline railroad grade in Maine, back to Sheepscot. It’s a perfect day out for the young or the young at heart and is fully accessible.
Regardless of which train you take, you’ll ride aboard historic open or enclosed railway cars pulled by our vintage steam locomotive built in Portland over 130 years ago. You can also explore our living museum at Sheepscot with cars and locomotives from many of Maine’s Two-Footers and view our workshops where you’ll have the chance to see a new steam locomotive and cars under construction and many others under restoration.
Advance tickets for all events and trains are highly recommended and available at wwfry.org. WW&F Railway Museum is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the restoration and reconstruction of narrow gauge railroads and railway equipment which operated in Maine’s Sheepscot Valley and elsewhere within the state. Currently WW&F operates 3.5 miles of mainline laid on the original right-of-way and maintains a museum and shop complex adjacent to the Railway’s Sheepscot Station. As such, all donations are tax deductible.
