Boothbay Region High School’s robotics teams ventured to Monmouth Memorial School on Saturday to compete in their final VEX robotics qualifying competition of the 2024-2025 season.
BRHS sent four teams to the event with the following students attending: Team Rocket (Thomas Babineau, Mason Paquette, Kora McKenney, and Jackson Zehm), The Snail Syndicate (Chase Mansfield, Afton Warren-Burdin), Bent Axles (Tyson French, Liam Jacobs, Jayden Orne), and The Knee Slappers (Brandon Seigers, Lucian Stoddard, Anthony Angelico).
With 36 teams in attendance, each team participated in seven qualifying matches throughout the morning. The Snail Syndicate won two of their matches and lost five, leaving them in 28th place at the end of the qualifying round. The Knee Slappers ranked 20th, with three wins and four losses. Team Bent Axles won five of their matches and lost two, which placed them at 8th overall for the competition. This allowed them to advance to the Round of 16, where they chose Team Rocket, who were 13th with four wins and three losses, to form an alliance. They won their first match in the Round of 16. Moving on to the quarterfinals, it looked like the Boothbay alliance would come out on top due to a rules infraction by the other team, but the referees determined it did not affect the match outcome and upheld the defeat, a tough blow which the Boothbay teams accepted with grace and remarkable sportsmanship.
Coaches Chris Liberti, Kristen Hanley, and Stephen Gottlieb are incredibly proud of the work that their teams have put into the competitions this season.
With the Maine State Vex V5 Championship coming up on March 1 in South Portland, they are awaiting the final results of the state skills rankings to determine if any of the teams will make the cut. It seems likely that at least one, Team Rocket, will move forward with the potential for the other teams to make it as well. Skills rankings are based on each team’s ability to score as many points as possible alone on the field with one minute on the clock. Team Rocket’s 20 points will hopefully be enough to send them on to the March 1 championship.
Wish our teams luck with the rest of the season! For more information, visit www.vexrobotics.com.
