Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library
Spring Break programming
Let’s be totally honest, parents of the Boothbay region — we’ve spent a lot of unplanned time at home with our kiddos this winter. Ten days of unplanned time, in case you’ve lost track.
And now, though there’s still an icy layer of snow on the ground as we write, we’ve got Spring Break coming in just two and a half weeks.
But fear not! The Library has your back with five days of kid- and family-centered programming.
It starts with a fun and relaxed illustrated poetry workshop for kids in grades 4-8. We'll read various poems, sample different styles and forms, pen our own poems, and then illustrate our creations any way we want. Books, materials, and snacks all provided by the library. You bring your words and creativity! Or, in the spirit of the workshop:
Tercet, quatrain, haiku or clerihew
all forms of poetry to discover by you
Funny, sad, many lines or few
you get to decide, and illustrate them too!
The poetry workshop runs on Tuesday, April 17 and Wednesday, April 18, from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Call to register your child.
The week’s activities continue on Thursday, April 19 and Friday, April 20, with a robotic self-watering plant pot workshop brought to us by Gizmo Garden. Again from 1 to 3:30, kids in grades 4-8 will sculpt a flower pot, wire up a pump and timer so it can water itself, and then decorate. No previous experience with electronics or coding expected or required, though a little background in building with clay will sure make the first part easier! Or should we say:
Robots are tricky
Plants tough to grow
But nothing is harder
Than building with play-doh
OK, we’re not using play-doh, but I needed that to rhyme.
Register your kids for RoboPots through our website at bbhlibrary.org/robo-pots/.
The fun wraps up with our second annual Earth Day Fest celebration on Saturday, April 21. We’ll be out on the lawn from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a bunch of other local non-profits, learning about the Earth, making crafts, planting seeds, and much more.
Earth Fest is also featuring a Chewonki program at 11 a.m. Be there for Animal Adaptations, a natural history program that explores the amazing ways animals use adaptations to survive in the wild. All ages!
So there you have it. A week of fun to keep everyone happy. Or should we say:
Snow falls, wind blows, trees fall, roads blocked
Buses cancelled, power out, school doors locked
Five a.m. call, 5:30 text, 6:00 alarm, mom’s tired
No one gets back to sleep, just playing, kids wired
Kids out, kids in, dogs and boots track snow
If only there were some other place they could go!
Last but not least this week, we’d like to announce that April is Poetry Month at the Library (can you tell we’re excited?). We’re putting up an interactive Poet Tree on one wall, and we want you to share your favorite poems or your own originals.
Happy spring everyone!
