Flags will return

    Dear Editor:

After being asked about the “Display the Colors” flag program by several folks around town and with the Letter to the Editor last week, I guess I better explain what’s happening with the flags.

Two years ago I discovered that the weather had caused greater deterioration than I had anticipated. I put up those flags that I considered serviceable and set about raising more money. Individual donations as well as some fairly large donations from both Masonic Lodges got us back on our feet. I bought replacement flags, repaired poles and put up about 47 flags last spring with the help of my family as well as Martin Page and his crew. This year I did the same thing and began to think about growing the program again.

When we do grow the program, it will be somewhat short of the original number of 126. I hope that we can bring the flags back to the Meadow area and some way up Route 96. Oak Street and Townsend Avenue are two areas that have been mentioned to me as places where people liked to see the flags as well. Give us a little time and Old Glory will be flying on more poles once again.

I appreciate all the positive comments the “Display the Colors” program has received; it’s nice to know that it is recognized as a benefit to the community. People wishing to donate can do so by sending checks payable to: Charles E. Sherman Post 36 to: P.O. Box 874, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538. Please put Display the Colors in the memo.

Another way to donate is to come see us at our public breakfasts and drop a check off there; donation or not, we would love to see you.

    Thanks again for the support.
