Healthy voter turnout in Boothbay

The polls were a popular place at the town office in Boothbay. As of noon, more than 1,250 ballots had been cast, which represented nearly half of the 2,537 registered voters in Boothbay.
An additional feature at the voting booths was a petition to save St. Andrews emergency room, which is slated for closure in April of next year by Lincoln Country Healthcare. Between the towns of Boothbay, Boothbay Harbor, Southport and Edgecomb, 771 signatures had been collected as of 12:45 p.m.
Voters exiting the polls stressed the importance of voting, but expressed different reasons as to why they cast ballots.
East Boothbay resident Barry Gibson said he expected a big turnout this election. “The same-sex marriage is very controversial, and I think everybody has an opinion about that in Maine,” he said. “I think it will be almost as important as the presidential race for a lot of people.”
Doris Cunningham, a self-described passionate voter, said the Presidential election was the most pressing part of the election.
Stanley Hodgdon said the race between local candidates Stephanie Hawke and Bruce MacDonald was one of the main reasons he voted on Tuesday.
Robert Vail said he came out to vote because, “It was absolutely crucial that Obama be defeated.”
Sherry Shea said she came out to the polls to vote yes on Question 1's same-sex marriage issue. She said it was one of the most important elections in recent years.
Marion Bates said she has always voted and hasn’t missed an election (with the exception of one primary) since 1954.
Howie Barter said he wanted to vote because he didn’t want to see Rep. Chellie Pingree and President Obama reelected. “I’m very into the fact that we need to change the President. Time for him to go, in my opinion.”
Tracey Hyson, Boothbay’s Deputy Treasurer said every election year the town office registers about 100 new voters, but also loses the same number due to people moving away.
