Sermon will highlight pilgrimage on Camino de Santiago
Marty and Frank Helman of Boothbay Harbor will describe the pilgrimage they took in Spain on the Camino de Santiago during a Sunday, Aug. 24 sermon at the Congregational Church. All are invited.
The Camino de Santiago is a thousand-year-old path that winds across Northern Spain from France in the east to the ancient city of Santiago de Compostela in the west. The path has been a pilgrimage route since the Middle Ages, and interest in walking it has revived in recent years, spurred by the movie "The Way," starring Martin Sheen, as well as numerous popular books.
The Helmans (aged 84 and 60) walked a portion of the Camino in April; at the Sunday service on August 24 they will describe their surprisingly strong spiritual and emotional response to the experience. Immediately after the service, all are invited to discuss a possible group pilgrimage to Spain to walk a portion of the Camino. All potential travelers are encouraged to come for the sermon and stay for the discussion that follows.
The Rev. Virginia Rickeman will lead the service at which the Helmans will speak about the pilgrimage. Services begin at 10 a.m. Sundays at the First Congregational Church of Boothbay Harbor.
