Businesses support BRHS STEM education
This year, several new courses were offered at Boothbay Region High School, all involving math, science and the creation of products. Students made electric guitars, composite boat models, skiffs, fine tables and ornamental boxes. They had the opportunity to wire residential circuits and build electric motors, speakers and generators.
The support we received from local businesses has been overwhelming, and these courses would have looked very different this year had it not been for their generosity. I would like to publicly thank the following:
Hodgdon Yachts for their expertise, donating all of the materials for our composites work, and allowing us to visit on four separate occasions; Music Doing Good for a large cash donation that got our Musical Instruments course off the ground; Great Island Boat Yard for donating all of the hardware and finish to build two skiffs; Northern Lights Electric of all of the electrical cable for our house wiring project; Elkins and Company for the variety of hardwoods four our "Band Saw Box" project; Dan's Repair and Hawke Motors for donating starters, pumps and alternators for us to dissect; Boothbay Harbor Rotary Club for allowing us to auction off one of our skiffs; TidePools for offering a place to sell our guitars; and Jonne Trees for producing our musical instruments video.
As a teacher, parent and resident of this community, I am continually amazed by the support that this community gives to its kids.
