Salutatorian Robert Campbell pursuing computer science
When Robert Campbell sets his sights on a goal, he said he always makes sure to follow through.
In his sophomore year, Campbell discovered he was ranked second in his class, and from that point on, he decided to maintain his rank for the rest of his high school career.
That tenacity has contributed to Campbell’s success both as a scholar and athlete at Boothbay Region High School.
“I feel pretty accomplished, I guess,” Campbell said. “I think I worked pretty hard for it.”
As an accomplished runner, Nordic skier, peer mentor and member of the math team, Campbell has his hands in a lot extra-curricular activities. But he said one of his true passions is working with computers.
“Computer science is really interesting to me, and it's a lot of fun to try to program,” Campbell said. “I think it would be really cool to get an internship in Washington, D.C., trying to integrate programming with that somehow.”
Campbell said he plans to pursue computer science in college. He has applied to both Colby and Dartmouth colleges, and is currently waiting to hear back.
Although his ambitions could take him far from home, Campbell said he is grateful for his friends and the tight-knit community of the Boothbay region.
“I think if you try hard enough here, you can get a fine education,” Campbell said. “The community is really nice.”
As salutatorian, Campbell said it is exciting to leave high school on a high note. Whether it was helping his team bring home the gold at the cross country championships last fall, or working towards a Bigelow Labs internship this summer, when Campbell knows what he wants, he will have already begun working for it.
“I always try to do what I say I'll do,” Campbell said.
