Valedictorian Sophia Thayer
Sophia Thayer, the top student in the Boothbay Region High School's class of 2014, will be attending Bates College in Lewiston in the fall. For what, she isn't yet sure.
“I'm undecided on what I want to do,” Thayer said. “Something in the humanities. Bates is a really good liberal arts college, and I think I'll find something there that's right for me.”
Thayer is the daughter of Peter Thayer and Kerry Lyons of Boothbay. She is on the lacrosse, cross-country, Nordic ski and track teams. In 2013, Thayer, along with teammate Robert Campbell, achieved top 10 all-conference status for the Nordic team, the first Seahawks to do so since the team began four years ago.
Thayer was surprised when she found out she was at the top of her class. She credits her achievement to the strong work ethic she learned from her teacher and coach, Nick Scott.
“Cross-country especially is a very physical and mental sport,” Thayer said. “Going long-distance takes discipline and perseverance.
“Our coach is a good role model and stresses those qualities.”
Thayer is also active in theater. She participates in Y-Arts and at the Boothbay Playhouse in the summer.
She is student council president and has been involved in student government since she was a freshman. She is also in the leader's club and the student representative on the Y board of trustees.
Courtney Chaney, one of Thayer's best friends, describes Thayer as “driven and enthusiastic.”
“I want to get things done. I finish what I start,” Thayer said. “But I didn't set out to be valedictorian, I wasn't one of those kids that decided in eighth grade I would do it, it just happened.”
