‘The Butler’ came to St. Andrews Village
About a dozen viewers saw this remarkable movie. It’s based on the true tale of a black child who grew up to be a butler in the White House. Through his eyes, the audience experienced a slide show of mid-20th century history.
At least one resident was seeing it for the second time. Others hope the film will return for another showing.
Next afternoon, pianist David Stone gave a happy recital of old favorite songs, laced with tidbits from the lives of their composers.
Inn residents celebrated the February birthdays with ice cream (plain or as sundaes), cake and the “Happy Birthday” song. Charlotte came from her cottage, but the other February people were unable to attend. Everyone is invited to each monthly birthday party; it’s a chance to have a good time with others.
Sunday was a brunch day. There was an Open House at one of the cottages. In the Peggy Pinkham Dining Room, a candy-maker from the Bath Sweet Shop set up an exhibit of sweets from the olden days, told something of the history of candy and candy-making and passed around samples. She gave a fascinating talk, with more to tell.
Postponed from an earlier stormy evening, a “late” dinner brought cottagers to the Inn by bus. Arriving by bus, cottager Charlotte joined violinist Shirley, accompanying her on the piano. This was a special pre-dinner treat.
A different kind of talk was Tuesday’s tale of President John Quincy Adams, told by Jerry Wiles. Adams served only one term but was later elected Representative to Congress and served effectively for several terms.
Wednesday afternoon, the Rev. Dr. Sarah Foulger came for a discussion in the library. Suddenly, the room was cold. Roy from maintenance appeared, repaired the automatic fireplace flame and the discussion went on.
Vernon’s daughters June and Janet came to visit him and help with taxes. Was it coincidence that later there was a craft session for Iris paper-folding card making? June had introduced the skill several years ago.
There’s always something popping at the Village. Stay tuned.
