Re: Grammar guerrillas

Dear Editor:
A problem with writing in support of orthodoxy in grammar is that one has to be punctiliously correct in doing so. In Tim Sample's charming "The grammar guerrrillas" (February 13), I am quite sure the errors in the final sentence were intentionally ironic and humorous. I suspect, however, that the impure use of "due to" a few paragraphs before was inadvertent. He might better have written "owing to the simple fact that that language" or better yet "because language,” but the orthodox use of "due to" is only as an adjectival phrase.
I write this with trepidation lest I done it wrong again.
