Curtain up at the Lincoln Theater
If you missed our original screening of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s “Richard II,” there is one more chance to catch it. The premiere audience has been saying terrific things about the experience. This week is our final Met Opera performance of 2013, in a highly acclaimed production marking the return of James Levine to the podium. And there is Daniel Radcliffe, of “Harry Potter” fame, in a very different, challenging role as beat poet Allen Ginsberg, at 17. Lots of intrigue and enjoyment this week at Lincoln Theater.
“All Is Lost” (PG-13, 1:46)
Robert Redford, nameless and all but silent, struggles with the elements after his sailboat is rammed by an errant shipping container somewhere in the Indian Ocean. Directed by J. C. Chandor (“Margin Call”), this film has the stark power and swift action of a classic seafaring tale, but it is also a moving and subtle allegory of human existence in the modern world. Closes Thursday, Dec. 12 with shows at 2 and 7 p.m.
“Kill Your Darlings” (R, 1:44)
Before Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs and Jack Kerouac were celebrated literary outlaws, they were college kids experimenting with writing, sex and drugs in wartime Manhattan. John Krokidas’s film focuses on Ginsberg (Daniel Radcliffe) and Lucien Carr (Dane DeHaan), a fellow Columbia undergraduate who was both an inspiration and a source of trouble for the others. The film is both a true crime tale and a coming-out story, insightfully exploring the connections between creativity, sexuality and violence. Show dates and times: Friday, Dec. 13, Wednesday, Dec. 18 and Thursday, Dec. 19 with shows at 2 and 7 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 14 at 7 p.m.; Sunday, Dec. 15 at 7 p.m.
The Met Live in HD: “Verdi's Falstaff” (3:20)
Verdi’s brilliant final masterpiece has its first new Met production in nearly 50 years, conducted by James Levine. Ambrogio Maestri sings the iconic basso buffo role of Sir John Falstaff, the boorish, blustery character originally seen in Shakespeare’s Henry IV and Merry Wives of Windsor. Angela Meade is Alice Ford, one of many objects of Falstaff’s affection, and Stephanie Blythe is the sharp-tongued Mistress Quickly. It will be broadcast Saturday, Dec. 14 at 1 p.m. It will be proceeded by a pre-opera talk, “Verdi, Falstaff, and Shakespeare,” at 11:45 a.m.
The Royal Shakespeare Company, “Richard II” (2:55)
In a Lincoln Theater first, join us for an encore screening of the premiere Royal Shakespeare Company broadcast of Shakespeare’s Richard II, captured live from the stage in Stratford-Upon-Avon. The story of power and plotting, Richard II is the first of Shakespeare's four plays about the House of Lancaster. Richard is King, ordained by God to lead his people. But he is also a man of very human weakness. A man whose vanity threatens to divide the great houses of England and drag his people into a dynastic civil war that will last 100 years. Playing Sunday, Dec. 15 at 2 p.m.
