Tax increment financing
Dear Editor:
Being very concerned to come to town meeting with at least some working knowledge of the real issues involved on the proposed Tax Increment Financing (TIF) and the bond issue, I recently sat down with the town manager.
I asked him to explain what our vote really means. If the TIF is adopted, any increase in tax revenues to the town of Boothbay from the substantial improvements within the TIF zone will not result in a decrease in federal and state aid for our school costs and other town expenses.
The increased tax revenue to Boothbay must, however, be used to fund infrastructure improvements within the TIF zone. The bond issue will fund these improvements but the additional income to the town will more than pay for the cost of the bond issue.
A yes vote will enable Boothbay to grow, create new jobs and give opportunities for our young people to live and stay here in town.
I urge a yes vote for the TIF zone and am in favor of the issuance of the bonds to pay for the infrastructure improvements.
