Seed starters rise up!
If you are weary of a winter that refused to properly arrive and now lingers beyond its welcome, take heart. The days steadily lengthen, and the spring sun beckons – it’s time to plant again, even if only indoors.
Mark your calendars for June 3, when the stalwart gardeners of the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library will offer a plant sale on the library lawn. Even those long timers that assured everyone that the last sale was their last sale are back and ready to dig.
This year’s sale will feature all the perennial favorites, like day lilies, hostas, black-eyed Susans, tomato seedlings and herbs. As always, there will also be those special hard-to-find plants from local master gardeners.
Although we have several regular plant donors, we are always looking for plant donations. If you are tending tiny seedlings on your window sills or starting seeds now, please consider planting a few extra for our plant sale. Both vegetables and flowers are welcome.
If you will have transplants from your garden to share, we ask that you bare root them and plant them in potting soil to keep out any unwanted pests. Please remember that transplants need time to recover to look their best on sale day. From the time the ground is workable until mid-May is a great time for transplanting for our sale. If you have many transplants and need potting soil, please contact Liz Lussier at LizLussier@outlook.com.
Once the snow is gone, pots for transplants will be available under the stairs behind the library. Take what you need and feel free to leave pots there for others.
This year’s sale will emphasize native plants. While people drool over those showy cultivars and plants from away, native plants are the workhorses that deliver. They offer essential habitat for the butterflies, pollinators, and birds we love. And they aren’t as needy as the PFAs. Native plants need less water, less tending and can better withstand our climate’s sometimes extreme weather.
We are looking forward to this year’s plant sale. We hope you will join us and pitch in if you can. Keep an eye on www.bbhlibrary.org for more information.
