Two weeks in one
We missed a week … that means this is your bonus week. Lucky Southport readers, we will cover two weeks in just one.
Some items from last week were the annual Firemen’s Dinner at Newagen Inn on May 30. It drew the largest crowd of diners that they had ever had. Everyone enjoyed the firemen’s exceptional wait service “skills” along with the bonus of musical entertainment.
The Southport Board of Appeals held a hearing on May 28 at Oliver’s Restaurant in response to two appeal requests from Knickerbocker Group to have a refrigeration unit outside at the restaurant.
Previously, the Southport Planning Board voted to deny a building permit to Oliver’s to have a refrigeration unit on the property next to the restaurant because they declared the unit to be a “structure” that was within 30 feet of a property line and 75 feet of the water.
The reason for the denial was based on the premise that the refrigeration unit, as defined by the Land Use Ordinance, was a structure. The Board of Appeals voted to affirm the decision.
News from the Southport Central School is winding down.
Monday was Field Day with a cookout featuring chef Duane Lewis and Matt Thiebault serving hot dogs, hamburgers, corn (must have the veggies, right), watermelon and cookies and fun.
The school’s last day is Thursday, June 13 with graduation at 9 a.m. at the Southport Town Hall. The graduates are Liam Cullina, Grace Robinson, Cameron Moeller, Reed Beavis, Gerald Gagne and Will LaBrecque.
More congratulations go to the Southport students who graduated from Boothbay Region High School this year … Cameron White, who just returned from a semester with Ocean Classroom traveling 5,000 nautical miles, and Lynn Pawlowski, who will be attending SUNY Fredonia University in New York state.
One more … eighth grade graduation is this Friday for Molly Thibault, Emma Rideout and Elisabeth Wright.
In this week of celebrations and graduation, let’s cheer for the 50th wedding anniversary of Dee and Howard Wright. Hooray!
Now stay with me; we are off to check in with the Southport bridge and all is well there. One more “adjustment” this week to recalibrate the wedges and “even” those bumps out (let’s hope). The bridge opening schedule continues opening every half hour and on the hour (as needed) from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. They had 56 openings last week (just know you wanted to know).
The famed Southport road crew reports that the winter “holes” are repaired and Cross Road should be completed this week, which means it will be open for all traffic.
The really big news of the week (drum roll, please) … today, Thursday, the 13) is Oliver Cusano’s 70th birthday. Did he say there is “free” wine today after 8 p.m.? Oops, just kidding!
Many island summer residents returning. Karen and Frank Brower here this week, as are Mike and Laurie Dowling, Kathy and Gene Hauser, Barbara and Steve Baseman, and Janet and Al Azzoni.
Time to get your calendar; here are some dates: Southport Island Association (SIA) Bolster Day is Sunday, June 30 at the Southport Town Hall from 5 to 7 p.m. All Southporters are welcome. SIA provides the refreshments, but you may bring something to share if you wish.
Note from the Southport Memorial Library: they welcome used book donations for the upcoming book and bake sale on August 2
There will be a gathering to celebrate and remember the life of Cheryl Webber Gemborys at the Southport Memorial Library on Saturday, June 15 at 1 p.m.
The Gift Barn will be open every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. lots of new gifts, books, hats, Southport napkins and more.
