Area teens harassed via Facebook
The Boothbay Harbor Police Department has been investigating reports of sexually inappropriate messages sent to teenage girls on Facebook.
Police Chief Robert Hasch said on May 9 that officers had brought the responsible individual to the police station to discuss the issue, and had ultimately arrested him on unrelated charges.
“We took this seriously,” Hasch said. “Officer Larry Brown let him know that what he was doing had gotten the attention of the police department.”
Hasch said teenagers who received the messages had responded to the situation well. “The kids handled it appropriately, either not answering him or telling him to buzz off,” Hasch said.
Hasch said he hopes underage recipients of inappropriate messages will report these to their parents and the police. He also encouraged parents to discuss Facebook and other social media use with their children.
