All Saints by-the-Sea season preview
Since the 19th century, residents and vacationers have gathered on Southport Island to worship God and to fellowship with each other in the beautiful setting on the water that is now All Saints by-the-Sea.
These gatherings will again commence on June 16 and continue for the next 12 weeks. People of all faiths are invited to come to Sunday services, at 8 and 10 a.m. and to join the Tuesday morning discussion groups held on the chapel porch from 9 to 10 a.m.
Each summer the church invites visiting clergy to come to Southport to conduct services and spend a week or two on the coast of Maine enjoying the beauty and calm pace of life here. The clergy leading our services this season come from all over the country and bring a richness of experience and diversity. In addition to the clergy, the chapel is pleased to welcome exceptional visiting organists to bring beautiful, enriching music to the island community.
This season opens, as is now the custom, with St. Columba’s Rev. Maria Hoecker. She will be followed by local retired priest Rev. Paul Tunkle and the Right Rev. Mark Beckwith, retired Bishop of Newark, New Jersey. Both Rev. Tunkle and Bishop Beckwith have been frequent celebrants at the chapel in past years. From Atlanta, Georgia, we will welcome returning Rev. Canon George Maxwell and from Washington, D.C., writer and spiritual leader Rev. Martin Smith. Two new clergy join us this summer. The Rev. Cristina Paglinauan from the Church of the Redeemer in Baltimore, Maryland is integrally involved in community engagement. The Rev. Bonnie Spencer comes to us from the Church of the Holy Redeemer in Denver, Colorado where she serves on the Race Task Force and in the Denver Hospice.
The organists we look forward to hearing this summer include returning musicians Henry Lowe, Timothy Harrell and Aims McGuiness. New to the organ this summer are Jay Zoller from Augusta, Maine and David Brensinger from Atlanta, Georgia.
This summer will also feature three special programs. On Saturday, June 29, All Saints-by-the-Sea will co-sponsor the Rev. Dr. Virginia Sheay at St. Columba’s in Boothbay Harbor for a morning seminar entitled “Your Life with the Psalms.” Mr. Henry Lowe will be presenting a special organ recital on July 21 at 4 p.m. An Evensong service featuring a time of quiet, calm and reflection will be presented this season on Sunday, August 25.
