Bicycling tips and a slow race at BRHS

Last week Boothbay Harbor Police School Resource Officer Larry Brown presented a bicycle safety course to students in physical education/health teacher Dennis Dacus’ classes. Officer Brown spoke about the importance of wearing a helmet, gloves, and bright clothing when riding on the roadways.
He also brought up that bicyclists have to obey the same laws as motorists in the cases of stop signs, cross walks, and one-way streets.
Students were able to try out some fat tire bicycles, which Bath Cycle let Brown borrow.
An added bonus was when all students at BRHS were invited to compete in a slow race, where riders were able to test their balance and riding skills. On May 22 the first ever “Bikeman Slow Race Challenge” was held at Porter Memorial Gym. There were approximately 20 riders who competed to secure one of the four spots in the final race.
The four finalists were Blake Erhard, Will LaBrecque, Grant Swope, and Bayly Carrasco Gaughan. It was a very close contest with Blake Erhard prevailing with a time of 3 minutes 45 seconds.
Four BRHS teachers members competed in the faculty slow race and Chris Liberti prevailed. Staff and students agreed it was a fun time to ride the fat tire bikes and showcase their skills on two wheels. Thanks to Bath Cycle for the use of these fat tire bikes.
