Seahawks track and field is set to begin another big season of running, throwing and jumping April 18. The Wiscasset-Boothbay Alumni Track and Field Meet was supposed to be the opening competition for both Seahawks and Wolverines, but was snowed out after a string of warm days gave athletes the false hope of an early start to the season.

Now, all 27 Seahawks – 16 boys and 11 girls – are raring to go for their first meet at Maranacook Community High School in Readfield where they will face Wiscasset Middle High School, Hall-Dale High School and Mountain Valley High School and the MCHS Black Bears.

The spring season comes after a winter season dedicated to preparation and competition for several athletes – following many seasons of struggling to fill rosters for Nordic skiing, the Seahawks opted for indoor track.

After a 10-year hiatus from indoor track, the Seahawks jumped into the Western Maine Conference since MVC does not feature indoor track. This pit the Seahawks and rival MVC Lisbon High School Greyhounds against a large pool of Class B teams, but athletes did not miss a beat. Throughout the season, Seahawks were regularly putting up heated competition in nearly every event despite some athletes never having participated on a track team.

“It'll be interesting to see how this can play a role in outdoor track, a full 14 weeks of an indoor season and then go into outdoor after that,” said Coach Nick Scott in a previous interview.

Indoor track’s most valuable player and returning spring athlete, Will Perkins, went on to prove himself in every indoor event he competed in including the two-mile run, one-mile run, 800-meter run, 400-meter dash, and high jump. He qualified to compete in all of them in the WMC State Championship. Perkins placed sixth in the one-mile event and fourth in the two-mile event.

The Seahawks come back this spring to follow a relatively successful 2018 track and field season. At states last year, the boys team placed 19th out of 33 teams and the girls team placed 21st out of 30 teams. Highlights included Jay Hasch, 2018, taking second in the high jump while Reagan Cola placed third in the 400m dash. The 800m and 400m relay teams of Perkins, Graham Harris, Blake Erhard and Kyle Ames, 2018 – took sixth and 11th.

“I have great hopes after coming off a strong indoor season,” Perkins said in an interview. “There’s good hope for the entire team, especially the 4x800 teams. There are some really strong athletes this season.”

There will be six regular season meets before the MVC Championship at Lisbon High School on May 23. Seahawks will travel to Wiscasset, Farmingdale, Bethel, Lisbon and Augusta the rest of April and May. Freshmen athletes will have a State Championship on May 28 at Morse High School and the MVC Class C State Championship is June 1.
