Boothbay wins at Dirigo
A fourth quarter comeback by the Boothbay Region High School girls varsity basketball team at Dixfield gave them a 60-47 win over the previously unbeaten Dirigo Cougars on Thursday night.
The game was close through the first three quarters, with Boothbay holding leads of 19-13 and 29-26 after the first two quarters. Dirigo (8-1) took the lead in the third quarter and led by three, 43-40, with eight minutes to play.
Key baskets and good foul shooting down the stretch gave the Lady Seahawks, now 9-1, the win.
Boothbay was led in scoring by Sara Durgan with 16 points, followed by Page Brown with 14, Morgan Crocker with 10 and Cagney O'Brien with eight.
"A really tremendous team effort," said Coach Tanner Grover about the game in an email. "We dealt with some adversity early on with foul trouble, but people stepped up." I was impressed by how we kept our composure as we jumped out to a quick lead only to have Dirigo claw back and eventually claim a lead of their own in the third period. We just stayed focused from start to finish and did not quit. It was a great game, but there is plenty of season left."
Boothbay is scheduled to host Monmouth on Monday, Jan. 12 and Dirigo on Wednesday, Jan. 14 in a rescheduled game.
