Seahawk boys win first Nordic meet at Black Mountain
The Boothbay Region High School Nordic ski team logged its first win in the sport’s short local history on Tuesday, Jan. 6 at Black Mountain in Rumford.
The Seahawks faced Dirigo, Mountain Valley and Mt. Abram on one of the coldest days of the winter season so far.
BRHS won the meet with 27 points, followed by Dirigo 30 and Moutain Valley 35. Mt. Abram did not have enough skiers to score as a team.
Senior Kyler Carty led the scorers, finishing fourth at 17:19, followed by Zach Vise (5th, 18:05), Joey Paolillo (7th, 19:40) and David Machon (11th, 21:11).
Also skiing for Boothbay were Liam Conlin (12th, 21:21), Trystan Mercier (13th, 21:41), Ray Perry (14th, 21:45), Kyle Alamo (16th, 22:25) and Sam Betts (17th, 26:27).
“This marks the first time that any Nordic team from Boothbay has won a ski meet,” Coach Nick Scott wrote in an email. “While we've had some competitive teams in the past we've never actually placed first.”
“This was also a good test to see where we stand among MVC schools and it would appear that we should be very competitive at the conference championships in February.”
Angela Machon was BRHS’s only female competitor at the meet. She finished 16th at 29:38.
With snow conditions on the lean side, the Nordic race planned for this Saturday at Leavitt High School in Turner has been moved to Starks Hill in Fryeburg. The boys race begins at 10:30 a.m. and the girls at noon.
