Midcoast Humane launches $75,000 matching challenge in honor of 75th anniversary
Midcoast Humane is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year—and inviting the community to be part of a life-saving opportunity. In honor of this milestone, two longtime supporters have pledged a $75,000 matching challenge grant, doubling every donation made during 2025, up to the full amount.
As of May 15, the organization has raised just over $65,000 and is urging supporters to help close the gap before the summer months, when animal intake spikes.
“Every summer, our shelters are overwhelmed with animals,” said Executive Director Jess Townsend. “In 2024, we took in more than 1,000 additional animals compared to 2022. The need is growing—and this matching challenge is the most direct way to help right now.”
Founded in 1950 as the Brunswick Animal Shelter, Midcoast Humane now serves 39 municipalities across Maine and provides shelter and care to more than 4,000 animals each year. Spring and summer are the busiest times of year for the organization—in 2024 alone, May through August saw the highest number of pet surrenders and stray animal intakes.
“This generous matching gift comes at a crucial time,” said Ed Blain, Board Chair. “It’s not just a celebration—it’s a call to action. Meeting this challenge means twice the support for the animals who need us most.”
Double your impact today
Gifts of any size made during 2025 will be matched dollar-for-dollar until the $75,000 goal is met. The funds will support veterinary care, shelter, food, and adoption services at a time of peak demand.

In addition to this remarkable fundraising opportunity, Midcoast Humane is also marking its 75th year with a series of community events and initiatives, including:

Additionally, the organization has launched the Diamond Donor Program, a legacy giving initiative to honor individuals making a significant commitment to Midcoast Humane’s mission.
“We’re excited to celebrate this anniversary with our entire community,” said Townsend. “But the best way to celebrate is by helping us save more lives—and this match challenge is the perfect opportunity to do just that.”
