Maulolo loses first wrestling match this season
Boothbay Region High School wrestler Antonio Maulolo lost on Jan. 7 for the first time this season. Maulolo, a two-time Class C 220-pound champion, was defeated by Michael Curtis of Wells High School who is the reigning two-time 220 pound Class B champion.
Boothbay Region traveled to Lisbon for a meet with the host and Wells High School. The Seahawks defeated Class C Lisbon, but lost to Class B Wells.
Maulolo entered the match with an 12-0 record and 55 career wins. Curtis has a career record of 151-13 and was the New England Qualifier champion in the 195-pound division last year. The two wrestlers may meet again at the Mid-State League championships.
Boothbay Region coach Allan Crocker believes Maulolo has an excellent chance to win a potential rematch in February.
“I think on any given day, Antonio has a real shot at beating him and hopefully he’ll get his chance at the league meet,” Crocker said.
Seahawk wrestlers emerging victorious against Wells were Howie Carter (160) by pin; Brandon Andrews (170) by injury; and Kaitlin Daku (138), Nick Labonte (113), Draco Peaslee (145), Lucas Leighton (285), all by forfeit.
Against Lisbon, Carter scored his 47th career win and improved his record to 12-1this season by pinning his opponent. Other Seahawks recording victories were Labonte and Maulolo, both by forfeit.
Boothbay Region’s next match is Wednesday, Jan. 14 at Dirigo High School in Dixfield. The Seahawks will compete against the host and Fryeburg Academy and Wiscasset High School.
