Black Bears upset Seahawks, 57-54
The eighth-seeded Maranacook Black Bears sent the top-seeded Boothbay Region Seahawks home for the season with a 57-54 upset win in the final Western Maine Class C quarterfinal game of the day at the Augusta Civic Center on Monday, Feb. 16.
The Black Bears, behind 21 points from senior forward Cameron Brochu, outscored Boothbay 16-9 in the final quarter to move on to face the fourth-seeded Winthrop Ramblers, who crushed Madison, 74-34, in the quarterfinal game played just before the Boothbay-Maranacook match-up.
Boothbay surrendered a 12-point, third-quarter lead of 45-33, after John Hepburn scored his 20th point and the Seahawks completed an 8-0 run. From there, Maranacook went on its own 8-0 run, fueled by Kyle Wilbur, who calmly sank three free throws after being fouled attempting a three, and hitting a three-pointer, to make it 45-41.
A series of Boothbay turnovers and missed shots gave Maranacook confidence in the final six minutes. Maranacook tied the game at 49-49 with 3:44 to play on two free throws by Wilbur.
After Maranacook rebounded the ball after a missed free throw, Brochu scored to give the Black Bears their first lead of the game since early in the first quarter, 51-49, with about 2:30 to play. Junior Abel Bryer tied the game on a basket in the paint, but Brochu came back to score another basket and Jason Brooks made both ends of a one-and-one free throw opportunity to give the 7-11 Black Bears a 55-51 lead.
Bryer (13 points) scored on a traditional three-point play to bring Boothbay to within one-point, 55-54, with under 30 seconds to play. But Maranacook sealed the victory with an long pass down court on an inbounds play with Kent Mohlar scoring an easy basket. A last second three-point try by Boothbay’s Julian Aponte hit off the rim and the Black Bears rebounded the ball and ran off the court in jubilation.
In addition to John Hepburn’s 20 points and Bryer’s 13, Evan Hepburn added 13 points.
Wilbur had 14 points and Jason Brooks had 10, in addition to Brochu’s 21, for Maranacook.
Boothbay finishes the season with an overall record of 16-3, excluding the conference championship game loss to Winthrop on Feb. 12.
