Wyatt Anthony at Montana State University
It is with great pleasure that we welcome home Wyatt Anthony, 2013 recipient of the Boothbay Region Student Aid Fund’s (BRSAF’s) L. Fred Jewett Scholarship, from his freshman year at Montana State University (MSU) in Bozeman, Mont. For his higher education Anthony chose the wide open spaces of the West, cattle country, rather than the more populous East Coast. Matriculating last fall 2013 as a geology major at MSU, Anthony finds himself entering his sophomore year this September as a geo spatial and environmental analysis (GSEA) major.
An avid outdoorsman (there’s a lot of outdoors in Montana) Anthony’s new major affords him great opportunity for environmental digital (computer) analysis to help solve water pollution and other resource management problems confronting the world today. A serious student, Anthony envisions a career in environmental analysis that is both challenging and exciting, affording him a real chance to make the earth a better place, that is to “make a difference.” Obviously, Anthony covets that special challenge; of the 14,000 students enrolled at MSU, Anthony is the only GSEA major!
Anthony, however, is not chained to microscopes and computers. Montana State University attracted him for more than its unique academic programs. In spacious Montana, outdoorsman Anthony finds skiing, kayaking, fishing, and mountain biking veritably at his doorstep. While a student at Boothbay Regional High School Anthony competed in Nordic skiing, and he has always enjoyed ocean kayaking. Indeed, this summer he will be working for the Tidal Transit Kayak Company in Boothbay Harbor.
As noted, Anthony’s education is in part underwritten by the L. Fred Jewett Scholarship, a scholarship established in 2013 as part of the bequest of L. Fred Jewett who passed away in 2012. Jewett graduated magna cum laude in 1957 from Harvard College. After earning a master’s degree in business administration, he returned to Harvard and spent the duration of his distinguished career, first as an officer of then as dean of admissions. He ended his career as dean of Harvard College. For decades Jewett summered at Cape Newagen on Southport Island. Dedicated to education and the beauty and smells of the great Atlantic Ocean, Jewett would be very pleased that his last bequest was helping someone who possesses the fine character, lofty career goals, and athletic interests of Wyatt Anthony.
