The defending Class C champion and top-seeded Winthrop/Maranacook field hockey team improved to 15-0 with a 7-1 playoff win over the visiting eighth-seeded Boothbay Region Seahawks Tuesday night, Oct. 29.
The Class C South quarterfinal clash was the third time Boothbay and Winthrop met this season, with the Ramblers winning 8-0 and 5-1 during the regular season.
Boothbay finishes the season at 5-10 while Winthrop moves on to play fourth-seeded Spruce Mountain in the South semifinal round. Spruce Mountain defeated Traip, 7-0 on Tuesday. Winthrop also defeated Spruce Mountain twice during the regular season, 4-0 and 3-1.
The Ramblers took a 4-0 lead into halftime before Boothbay’s Moriah Smith scored early in the third quarter. Winthrop denied any more shots on goal in the second half.
