This week at the Lincoln Theater
"The History of Concrete" - (NR; 1 hour, 41 minutes) - Following the finale of his acclaimed HBO series "How To with John Wilson," NYC documentarian John Wilson looks to the bedrock of his beloved New York City for inspiration and structure. Concrete, the world's most widely used building material, appears as an ever-present life force, and John sets out to make the definitive documentary on the matter. After attending a workshop on how to write and sell a Hallmark movie, he decides to use the industry-approved Hallmark formula to tell this seemingly drab story and increase his movie's appeal. Final showing Thursday, Nov. 12 at 1 p.m.
"James McNeil Whistler" - Exhibition on Screen - (NR; 1 hour, 30 minutes) - In an era of great change and great beauty emerged the character of James McNeill Whistler. Considered by some to be one of the great innovators of 19th century art, Whistler disrupted the strict conventions of Victorian society in pursuit of a new cult of beauty, creating “art for art’s sake.” He found a parallel between painting and music, emphasizing the importance of tonal harmony in his work. His most famous painting, "Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1" (1871), commonly known as "Whistler’s Mother," is a revered and often parodied portrait of motherhood. It is arguably one of the most famous paintings in history and this film will unveil the artist behind the art. Tate Britain is now holding the first major retrospective of Whistler in three decades. Playing for two screenings only Thursday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. and Friday, Nov. 13 at 1 p.m. Tickets: $15 adult, $13 LT members, $5 youth.

Playing Friday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 14 and Wednesday, Nov. 18 at 1 and 7 p.m.; and at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15 and Thursday, Nov. 19. Presented in partnership with Mexicali Blues.
