This week at the Harbor Theater
"Wicker" - (R; 1 hour, 45 minutes) - In a quiet seaside village where tradition rules and gossip travels fast, a fiercely independent fisherwoman (Oliva Colman) has had enough of being mocked and judged by her narrow-minded neighbors. Tired of being treated as an outcast and determined to find happiness on her own terms, she makes an extraordinary decision: commissioning a husband crafted entirely from wicker. But when her unconventional companion becomes the center of an unexpected romance, the village erupts in jealousy, outrage, and increasingly outrageous chaos. Blending dark comedy, romance, and a touch of the fantastical, Wicker is a wonderfully eccentric tale about love, loneliness, and the absurd lengths people will go to preserve the status quo. Both mischievous and surprisingly heartfelt, this offbeat story challenges expectations about relationships, belonging, and what it really means to find your perfect match. Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2 p.m. (OCAP), Thursday, Nov. 12, 7 p.m.
“Bouncing all the way to a truly perfect ending, Wicker is funny and freaky and sweetly romantic. It is also relentless in its conviction that the most destabilizing force in a society is a woman who dares to ask for what she wants.” – Jeannette Catsoulis, New York Times
"Klara and the Sun" - (PG13, 1 hour, 26 minutes) - Based on the bestselling novel by Nobel Prize-winning author Kazuo Ishiguro, Klara and the Sun is a moving exploration of love, family, and what it truly means to be human. Jenna Ortega stars as Klara, an Artificial Friend designed to provide companionship, whose greatest wish is to find a home where she belongs. When she meets Josie (Mia Tharia), a young girl navigating a complicated relationship with her mother (Amy Adams) and the lingering effects of a devastating family loss, the two form an immediate and extraordinary bond. Through Klara’s innocent curiosity, unwavering loyalty, and unique perspective on the human world, she begins to bring hope and healing to a family struggling to reconnect. Written and directed by Academy Award winner Taika Waititi ("Jojo Rabbit"), this heartfelt science-fiction drama blends emotional storytelling with timely questions about artificial intelligence, human connection, and the enduring power of love. Plays at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13; Saturday, Nov. 14; Thursday, Nov. 19. Matinees at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15, 2 p.m. and Wednesday, Nov. 18 (OCAP).
"Once Upon A Time in Harlem" - Arts on Film Series presentation - (PG-13; 1 hour, 40 minutes) In 1972, pioneering filmmaker William Greaves brought together some of the last surviving artists, writers, musicians, and intellectuals of the Harlem Renaissance for an extraordinary gathering at Duke Ellington's Harlem townhouse. Many had not seen one another in decades, and over the course of two days, their conversations unfolded into a remarkable exchange of memories, spirited debates, and firsthand accounts of the cultural movement that transformed American art, music, literature, and Black identity. Captured on film and brought to audiences more than 50 years later, "Once Upon a Time in Harlem" offers a rare opportunity to hear these influential figures tell their own stories, reflecting on their friendships, creative achievements, and the challenges they faced. Both an intimate reunion and an invaluable piece of cultural history, this compelling documentary celebrates the enduring legacy of the Harlem Renaissance and the extraordinary people who helped shape it. Two shows only! Friday, November 20, 2 p.m. and Saturday, November 21, 2 p.m. Regular ticket prices.
“It deepens audiences’ understanding of healthy, effective debate through a reflection of our not-so-distant past at a time when too many are consumed by self-aggrandizement rather than the roadmap those who came before them already laid out.” – Candice Frederick, Salon.com
