This week at the Harbor Theater
"Hamilton" - (2020; PG13; 2 hours, 40 minutes) - The filmed version of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s groundbreaking Broadway musical, capturing the energy and spectacle of a live stage performance. Blending hip-hop, R&B, and traditional show tunes, the musical tells the story of Alexander Hamilton, one of America’s Founding Fathers, through a contemporary lens. Filmed at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in New York City with the original Broadway cast, the production traces Hamilton’s journey from immigrant outsider to influential statesman, highlighting his role in the Revolutionary War, the creation of the nation’s financial system, and his complex personal relationships. Final shows Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2 p.m. (OCAP), Thursday, Oct. 9, 7 p.m.
"The Roses" - (R; 1 hour, 45 minutes) - The film reimagines the darkly comic 1989 classic "War of the Roses" with a fresh take on love, power, and the unraveling of a marriage. When Oliver and Barbara Rose (Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman) decide to divorce after years of building a seemingly perfect life together, their split quickly spirals into an all-out war. Neither is willing to give up the sprawling home they once shared, and what begins as a battle of words escalates into a ruthless, escalating fight where no tactic is too extreme. Directed by Jay Roach, The Roses balances biting satire with emotional intensity, examining what happens when love curdles into resentment and possession becomes more important than happiness. Brutally funny and shockingly relatable, the film asks: how far would you go to win when the prize is everything you’ve already lost? Opening Friday, Oct. 10, 7 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 11, 7 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 12, 2 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2 p.m. (OCAP), Thursday, Oct. 16, 7 p.m.
“It’s Colman and Cumberbatch at the top of their games, with a lively script and strong direction, that make The Roses so much more than a routine reboot.” – Thelma Adams, AARP Movies for Grownups
