Wedding a first at St. Andrews Village
We all know feel-good stories on the internet or on TV, but nothing compares to experiencing one in the moment. And that is exactly what happened on Saturday, September 8 when two independent living residents tied the knot at St. Andrews Village Retirement Community in Boothbay Harbor.
People can find love at any age and that was definitely the case for Leonard Belanger and Margaret (Peggy) Coolong.
“We often sat together at dinner and at some of the activities—we both love music and really enjoy attending together,” commented Coolong. “When I did a short stay in the Zimmerli Pavilion (skilled rehabilitation) months back, Leonard was so cute; he would bring me my newspaper each morning,” she added.
What started as a special friendship grew stronger. The two senior lovebirds became engaged and on the afternoon of the 8th they exchanged vows, officiated by Pastor Richard Rego of the First United Methodist Church of Boothbay Harbor and Father Reverend Thomas Murphy, pastor of All Saints Parish, Roman Catholic Church.
Leonard and Peggy are the first two residents to get married on the property, making the occasion even more special. Loved ones, fellow residents, and staff surrounded them.
“When I first met Peg, she made a big impression on me. I felt like she was an old friend,” Leonard commented. “Ultimately we both knew it was the right choice for us to be together—we found joy and love in each other's company and are going to spend the rest of our lives together.”
Family and friends came from all over, including Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Tennessee, Oklahoma and Texas. Both Belanger and Coolong are great-grandparents and were thrilled to have some of their youngest family members present.
The reception was also held at the Village, complete with wedding cake, music, and lots of photos.
“We are so grateful to the staff here every day, but particularly on our special day—they really went out of their way. We were so glad many of them attended the ceremony,” said Coolong.
