Victoria Schmid: Keeping her options open
At 17, Victoria Schmid hasn't singled out a career choice, but she figures studying one of her favorite subjects, biology, is a good place to start.
“Biology is broad enough that I can change to more specific types, like medical, or oceanography or environmental science,” Schmid said.
The daughter of Pat and Matt Schmid of Boothbay plans to major in biology and minor in Spanish at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, N.Y.
Schmid is one of Boothbay Region High School's top 10 graduating seniors for 2014.
Her friendships have been one of the best parts of her high school years, after a quiet beginning. “As a freshman I was so scared, I never said anything.”
Once she started talking with other students, she found she made a lot more friends that way, she said.
The National Honor Society member has been active in school sports. Schmid has played four years each of softball and field hockey, winning coaches' awards in both and a most valuable player award in field hockey; and one year of cross country. Lacrosse is also an interest.
Another aspect of her high school experience has been the interest she said BRHS teachers have shown, in wanting her and other students to succeed.
“This year, especially, I've been noticing how much each teacher cares about each student. They want to help you and see you do well,” she said.
The research and essay-writing skills she has gained should help her in college, she said. In the meantime, she was looking forward to the remaining weeks of senior year.
“It's been the most fun year.”
